The winner of the $2,000 No-Limit Hold'em tournament at this year's World Series
of Poker (Event #6 at the 2006 WSOP) was none other than Mark Vos, a 22
year-old Australian who is originally from South Africa.
Vos is well known in online poker circles as 'pokerbok' and when he plays in
card rooms he typically wears a Springbok rugby jersey!
Vos won a mammoth $803,274 for finishing first in the event, and he also won his
first WSOP bracelet.
Based on his results this newcomer to professional poker could well find that it
is the first of many.
He was recently signed up to represent Full Tilt Poker, as he regularly plays in
the biggest cash games at that online poker room. He is already regarded as one
of Australia's best poker players, and this result confirms his talent.
The final table for this event finished as follows:
1. Mark Vos - $803,274
2. Nam Le - $401,647
3. J. R. Reiss - $209,555
4. Thomas Hunt - $160,695
5. Willard Chang - $136,211
6. Kevin Peterson - $115,255
7. Vanessa Seibert - $101,285
8. David Wells - $87,315
9. Juan Carlos Mortensen - $73,344
When asked about his future plans after winning this tournament Vos told
interviewers that he plans to travel to South Africa later this year, so
obviously the country is still close to his heart.
When faced with a choice between Australia and South Africa it is clear where
your loyalties and passions should lie, even if you do opt for the 'cushier'
lifestyle Down Under.
Our congratulations to Mark Vos, and we look forward to seeing more World Series
of Poker winners this year with links to South Africa.
