September 4 - As a prelude to the excitement that is expected to grip South
Africa next year when the FIFA World Cup 2010 takes place, one of the
soccer event's partners, Sony has been parading the winner's trophy around the
country.
Rich Mkhondo, who serves at the Chief Communications Officer of the 2010 FIFA
World Cup Organizing Committee said: "The World Cup is for everybody. We are all
responsible for its success and now is the time to start generating excitement,
be innovative with this opportunity and not only deliver a great event, but be
the best ambassadors we can for this country."
Hundreds of fans paraded past the trophy, enjoying their only chance to be
near such a prestigious object before it is thrust into the hands of the winning
World Cup team next year.
"I could not believe I was standing next to the trophy, they took a photo of
me and it was such a great feeling," said 13 year old KK Malefetse from
Johannesburg."
Soccer fans were hoping to get their photos taken with the trophy, and had a
good chance of doing so thanks to a competition that was run by Sony over the
weekend.
One of Johannesburg's morning shows ran a competition whereby winners could
take part in a virtual Sony PlayStation football game (FIFA 09), with the chance
of winning a PlayStation, plus having a photo taken next to the trophy.
The winner of the competition, Jarryd Soma said: "The World Cup is going to
be awesome. I hope that there will be a sense of unity between South Africans,
and that we will be friendly to all visitors."
