April 2 - The murder of Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer in a Jamaican hotel
room on March 18th this year has been likened to a 'Hollywood murder mystery',
with its tropical setting, multiple suspects, and intriguing clues set around
the genteel sport of cricket.
While this is not the first time that the sport of cricket played and loved by many nations around the globe has been plagued by claims of match fixing and corruption, it is certainly the first time that it has spurned a murder
straight out of an Agatha Christie novel.
One of the current and most popular theories surrounding Woolmer's death - by
strangulation - is that shortly before his death he accused some of his team's players of being involved in match fixing, an accusation that got back to certain bookmakers who chose to silence him.
At one time the British-born Woolmer was hired as head coach for the South
African cricket team. Perhaps for this reason, Clive Rice, a former South
African test cricketer and long-time friend pointed a finger at dirty bookmakers as the culprits.
Rice was quoted as saying, 'Before the story of match fixing could be leaked,
the bookmakers went and sorted him out'.
So far Jamaican police have questioned all
Pakistani team members and taken DNA samples from them. They are also studying
video footage from the 12th floor of the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, to see who might have visited Woolmer during his final hours.
There was no sign of forced entry to his room, police have reported.
