July 1 - Today's
July Handicap, South Africa's most famous sports horserace, is incredibly
wide open, a fact that is reflected in the betting for the big race.
A maximum field of twenty runners will go to post competing for the first prize of R1.25 million, and three horses share joint favouritism currently at 6/1.
They are Eyeofthetiger, Elusive Fort, and Hunting Tower. Our selections bypass
all three of those horses!
The three we think you need to watch are: African Appeal, Jamaica, and Equal
Image. We think that the Mike Bass runner African Appeal has what it takes to
win it all today, and at odds of 10/1 he's definitely worth a punt at that
price.
African Appeal's trainer Mike Bass has a superb record in the race and listen to
the confidence he has in the horse: African Appeal has improved since his run
behind Bishops Rock, and I am confident he will see out the trip. He's not an
easy ride, but jockey Glenn Hatt knows him better now.
If things go their way during the running of the July Handicap, I think
African Appeal will win.' Bass is not usually this outspoken and we're taking
note of what he has to say.
If you're looking for the ideal horse to include in swingers, exactas, trifectas,
and all your exotic plays look no further than the game old mare Jamaica.
She's
a front-runner, and not ideally
suited to the course but she never relents and has more heart than any of the
three-year-olds ahead of her in the betting. She may not hang on to win, but
she'll be in the shake-up.
Another runner worth a look is Equal Image from the fearsome Mike DeKock yard.
You can never count out his entrants and Equal Image must be the best of them
this year.
Why are we ignoring the three-year-old runners? Most of the good ones have to
carry too much weight, and that cannot be discounted in this race. It is a
handicap after all, and none of the younger horses have shown themselves to be
superstars.
They will be unable to overcome the stiff impositions placed on them by the
handicapper. Finally, their form shows so many inconsistencies, with none of
them dominating - that to us is a sign that the form itself is not that strong.
Here is the latest betting. We expect a few changes by the time they're off and
running, if only because African Appeal will surely shorten in the betting after
our recommendations become known!
Latest betting for the July Handicap: 6/1 Eyeofthetiger, Elusive Fort, Hunting
Tower; 7/1 Lion Tamer; 8/1 Bishop's Rock; 10/1 African Appeal; 12/1 Money Bags;
14/1 Equal Image, Jamaica; 16/1 Eurovision; 20/1 Bar & Better.
