April 2 - Victor Chandler International, a global gambling operation
with its head offices in Gibraltar and others scattered around the world, from
Macau to Buenos Aires, has stated that it would soon be branching into the South
African gambling market. The company is presently seeking the necessary trade
licenses that will allow it to enter the local industry and compete against
other well-established groups.
When asked why he was seeking to join the South African market, CEO and
company founder, Victor Chandlers, said that the local market, especially horse
racing, had always attracted him. Chandler has three race horses that were
trained in the Cape. "It is also clear that most South Africans are passionate
about sports," he said.
The company's plans are to focus on online betting, with casino, poker and
sports elements incorporated into one operation. A call center is also part of
the greater vision. Legislation is under way to legalize the online gambling
industry in South Africa and Victor Chandler International intends to be at the
forefront when the first licenses are issued.
In an interview, Chandler was asked whether he had considered buying out an
existing company in the South African market. He replied that while it had been
an option, he had eventually rejected the idea and would, instead, be partnering
with an as of yet undisclosed local operator with considerable experience in
sports and e-gaming.
Victor Chandler admitted that the 2010 World Cup event, due to take place in
South Africa, was a major deciding factor in his decision to join the South
African market. But he was quick to reassure that "it was only one reason, and
we are here for the long term and are excited about entering this market."
