June 28 - With the excitement of the Confederations Cup soccer tournament at its peak, it can safely be said that the biggest surprise of the competition has been the United States soccer team.
It is no secret that the US has always been the underdog is international soccer tournaments such as the Confederations Cup. While the talent exists, this country's teams always seem to pale in comparison with giants such as Brazil, Spain and Germany.
And so it came as a massive surprise when the United States reached the semi finals of the Confederations Cup with a 1-2 group record.
The score was the result of an excellent run of wins - a 3-0 win over Egypt, as well as Brazil's 3-0 win over Italy.
When the United States met Spain, bookies and fans believed that victory was a given for the latter. So much so that the United States was even taken off the board by some sports bookers.
The Spanish team reached the semi finals in peak form, having not lost a game for an incredible three years, and so the US win of 2-0 over the Spaniards come as a huge shock to this team's fans.
The United States now faces a rematch against Brazil - a team that beat them 3-0 earlier on in the Confederations Cup tournament. With the US on a winning streak, it's with a 'never-say-never' attitude that many punters are placing their bets this time around. While on the surface Brazil is considered a much more powerful team than the US - and is therefore enjoying a 1/7 favorite status across the board - stranger things have happened in the past and the US may very well surprise us all once again!
