January 17 - Herschelle Gibbs, the Proteas batsman who made racist remarks about
Pakistan fans during the recent cricket Test against Pakistan in Centurion last
weekend, has received a two Test match ban from Cricket South Africa (CSA) and
the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Gibbs was suspended after a stump microphone picked up his comments when he
called a group of Pakistani fans 'baboons' and 'a bunch of bloody animals' after
the fans allegedly targeted the Proteas with monkey noises and racist comments.
Proteas captain Graeme Smith said that while the team did not condone Gibbs
action, they did understand them in the context of racial and offensive comments
that were being directed at Gibbs and the Proteas in general from some Pakistani
fans.
'There was a quite a lot of racial abuse from Pakistan fans towards our players
which I think provoked a lot of what happened,' said Smith.
Said Cricket South Africa chief executive Gerald Majola, 'CSA has investigated
the matter and we have heard the remarks made by Herschelle Gibbs in response to
verbal abuse directed by a number of Pakistan supporters at Paul Harris while he
was fielding on the boundary. He has apologised if he has caused offence to
anyone.'
South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series as Jacques Kallis and
Hashim Amla steered the team to victory on the final day with an outstanding
119-run, fourth-wicket partnership.
