April 3 - The Tsogo Sun thought it would be doing good by donating a significant amount of money to the African Christian Democratic Party to go towards its election campaign.
However, a statement issued by the ACDP this week turned down the offer, with the party citing a policy of not accepting donations from casinos or gambling groups, as its main reason.
"The African Christian Democratic Party commends the commitment to democracy exhibited by the Tsogo Sun Group in offering a fair and even handed donation to all of the political parties," said a statement by the ACDP Deputy President and National Treasurer, Jo Anne Downs.
"However," she continued, "in terms of a past resolution by the ACDP Federal Council of Provinces, the ACDP are unable to accept a donation from a casino. We believe that we must display integrity in the receipt of donations and cannot accept what would otherwise have been a very useful contribution to our election funds because we do not support legalized gambling."
The ACDP made no attempts to hide its disdain for gambling of any kind and came out strongly against this pastime enjoyed by millions of South Africans. "The ACDP regards gambling as a serious issue," continued the statement. "Gambling by nature all too often becomes habitual and addictive, thus destructive. Its widespread appeal through the perception of a quick fix in desperation, usually leads to loss and an even more desperate situation contributing to poverty and wrecking relationships. Gambling has been recognized as seriously undermining family life, which undercuts the struggle to eradicate poverty in South Africa."
Tsogo Sun Gaming, which donated equally to all South Africa's political parties, is the largest black empowerment company in the country's leisure industry, employing thousands of South Africans at its top gaming destinations across the country (Montecasino, Sun Coast Casino and Entertainment World, Hemingways Casino, the Ridge Casino and Entertainment Resort and the Emnotweni Casino).
