May 5 - Ensuring their spot at the top, the Hurricanes annihilated the Blues with a 45-27 win in Wellington on Friday. A loss for the Blues now means that they are all the way down to eighth position, and dreams of being in the play-offs are all but blowing in the wind.
Back home in South Africa, it wasn't turning out to be such a good day for the Lions either.
The Crusaders beat the Lions 32-20 in Johannesburg on Friday, keeping the Crusaders alive as possible contenders for the Super 14 play-offs.
And the Cheetahs were also unable to keep their winning streak alive, as they went down 18-10 to the Waratahs in Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein on Friday.
Saturday's games started with a surprising final result between the Reds and Brumbies at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. A 52-13 win for the Brumbies meant that they get to hold on to the Rod Macqueen Cup, and they have also maintained their flawless record against the Reds in the 21st century.
The much anticipated game between the Sharks and Highlanders at the Absa Stadium in Durban on Saturday, gave the Sharks a much needed 23-15 victory over the Highlanders.
The game, however, wasn't without its drama. Daniel Bowden of the Highlanders was the first to be seriously reprimanded, for his second high tackle of the game, and was sent to the sin bin as punishment. Then scrumhalf Rory Kockott of the Sharks was given a red card for hitting a Highlander player in the face. This red card is only the second red card in the 2009 tournament, and both have been given to scrumhalves.
The Bulls followed suit, and beat Western Force 32-29 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The Force may have denied the Bulls a bonus point, but nevertheless, the win puts the Bulls third on the log, and in a very good position to fight for home ground advantage in the play-offs.
The final game for the weekend was between the Chiefs and Stormers. The Chiefs humiliated the Stormers on their own home ground in Newlands, securing a 28-14 victory and an essential bonus point, moving them into second place on the table.
