June 2 - It all came down to two teams - the Bulls and the Chiefs. Two teams well deserving of being in the final, and both worthy of taking the title. But both teams had different reasons for wanting the title more. The Bulls won the title in 2007, and were back to prove that their previous win wasn't by fluke.
On the other hand, it was the Chiefs first Super 14 final, and as the captain Mills Muliaina admitted, that on paper, there was no way his team should've been at the finals, but they were determined to make history for their squad.
But as they game came to a close, it was obvious that the trophy wasn't going to leave South Africa and Loftus Versveld in particular.
The boys in blue didn't just win the 2009 Super 14. They demolished the Chiefs, with a 61-17 victory, rewriting the history books.
The final score is the biggest winning margin in a Super 14 final. In 2001, the Brumbies set the original record with a 30 point margin win (36-6) over the Sharks in 2001. The points score of 61 also beat the Brumbies 47 score points in the 2004 final.
And if that wasn't enough, Morne Steyn of the bulls broke another Super 14 record, with a total of 11 drop goals in one season. The crowning glory of his achievement was his eleventh drop-goal in the final.
The Chiefs were hoping to win a final on foreign soil, which would've made them only the second team to have done so, but the Bulls weren't having it, and they sealed the game, making it their first final on home ground.
