October 8 - The Sun King, Sol Kerzner, has made his return to South Africa to
begin construction of his ambitious R900-million One&Only Cape Town resort
overlooking the picturesque and tourist-friendly V&A Waterfront that has been 4
years in the planning.
The project came to a stand-still when the V&A Waterfront got snared up in
litigation with the City of Cape Town regarding zoning. He said that the
decision to build this resort reflects his belief that the country's tourism
industry will continue to go from strength to strength.
The One&Only Cape Town will have all-encompassing views of Table Mountain and
the harbour. Three massive 600 square metre penthouses, two man-made islands -
one boasting a high-tech spa and the other with hot pools and a soothing
meditation/relaxation area, add to the exclusive development. The luxurious
130-room hotel will have a wonderful view over the V&A Waterfront and is expected to
open towards the end of 2009.
The contemporary hotel design is expected to be strongly influenced by African
culture and heritage. Dining out also promises to be a pleasure with the
celebrated Japanese chef, Nobu Matsuhisa tantalizing taste buds with his
creations that have been tweaked to add some extra South African zing.
Sol
Kerzner seems to be relishing his return to the business after the untimely
death of his son, Butch, in a helicopter crash in the Dominican Republic. With
scant regard to the fact that he underwent heart bypass surgery a year ago, he
shows no sign of slowing down.
Currently the lavish One&Only brand has resorts in the Bahamas, Dubai, the
Maldives, Mauritius and Mexico and he intends having four more of the luxury
resorts open for business by 2010. These four resorts are to be developed in
Morocco, Zanzibar, Cost Rica and Dubai. 'The World' resort in Dubai is a
man-made archipelago of 300 islands in the form of a world map.
Kerzner believes a luxury resort of this type will not only stir-up South Africa's
tourism industry but will also attract new market of a highly sought after
'higher-income' tourists.
