October 27 - Now in its fourth week, the strike at Sun International (SIS) over
wages has continued this week with a call by the Congress of South African Trade
Unions (Cosatu) to boycott the tourism, leisure and gambling group.
Almost two and a half thousand striking Sun International workers, led by Cosatu
affiliate, the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu),
are demanding a 10% wage increase while Sun International is willing to pay a
6.5% increase.
As a result of the strike and wage negotiations, Cosatu has urged South African
music promoters to remove Carnival City, a popular Sun International music
venue, as a musical venue on October 29th and 31st when two international artist
music concerts have been scheduled.
Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi last week successfully convinced the
2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC), of which he is a member,
to cancel Sun International's Sun City Casino and Resort as its meeting venue.
Sun International group human resources director Joe Lukwago-Mugerwa confirmed
that the LOC did cancel its meeting last week at Sun City, but confirmed that
the music concerts scheduled for this weekend Carnival City were going ahead.
