November 7 - Sun International, South Africa's largest gambling operator and hospitality provider, released figures relating to its financial performance in the first quarter of 2008 this week.
The report showed that Sun International's revenues grew by 3 percent in the first three months of the year.
Year on year comparisons showed that revenue from room occupancy increased by 13 percent for the Johannesburg based company, while revenues from food, beverage and what Sun International terms "others" increased by 8 percent.
However, one of the most prominent facts in the first quarter report was the poor performance of Sun International's casino arm.
Compared to last year's figures, revenue from casino operations increased by only 1 percent, according to the report.
Sun International stated that it did not forecast good performance in its casino and gambling operations in the upcoming first half report, and that the period would prove to be extremely "challenging" for its casino business.
Nevertheless, Sun International was optimistic that strong performance in other, non-gambling areas, would offset any potential losses.
Sun International is considered the leader in South African gambling entertainment, and operates top brand names in a number of Southern African locations, including the iconic Sun City, the Wild Coast Sun, GrandWest Casino in Cape Town and the Boardwalk Casino in Port Elizabeth.
