July 18 - Mervyn Naidoo has proven that hard work, dedication, and a
'hands-on' management approach can eventually lead a manager to top positions in
one of the world's leading resort companies.
The Durban-born Naidoo, who is employed as general manager of the
Boardwalk Casino in Port Elizabeth, was recently promoted to become a
divisional director for the Sun International hotel group, overseeing its
Gaming South's division's operations.
The operations, which will be headed from a Cape Town office, will include
overseeing top brand names such as the Mother City's GrandWest Casino and
Entertainment World, the Lesotho Sun, the Gold Valley Casino and Lodge in
Worcester and, naturally, the Boardwalk Casino in PE.
Naidoo expressed his satisfaction at being appointed to such a high position
in the Sun International group. "I am very excited about my new position," he
said, also stating that he would be "a frequent visitor to Port Elizabeth as I
will be integrally involved in the impending license renewal process."
Naidoo's partner will remain on in Port Elizabeth under the end of the year
to allow her son to finish out the school term.
Naidoo laughs at the fact that he will now boss his former boss, Graham Vaas
who serves as General Manager of GrandWest in Cape Town. "Graham and I started
working from 1996," he recalls. "He was the Eastern Cape regional manager. He
played a larger role in my development. When I took over as general manager, the
change was natural. Graham basically groomed me for this position. He is the
current General Manager of GrandWest. After all the years, we've remained good
friends and we have a wonderful relationship."
