November 27 - The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has
threatened to bring
Sun City
to its knees in December if several of its work grievances are not addressed.
The powerful union said that it would prompt strikes and road blocks around
the luxury resort if management does not address problems that were identified
last month.
"This is wholly prompted by the stubbornness of both Sun City Resorts and Sun
International South Africa's management in responding to issues raised by Cosatu
on the 30th of October's march," said Cosatu in a statement on Tuesday.
The October march was prompted after a national anthem was played that was
seen as an insult to former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela.
Cosatu is demanding that Sun City terminate its contract with Falcon
Security, whose employees were involved in the 'racist' incident, despite the
fact that a number of personnel had already left the company as a result.
A new incident, however, has toughened Cosatu's demands considerably, leading
to the strike threats.
Recently several female Sun City workers were allegedly strip searched after
R40 went missing. The women were humiliated by the incident, especially after no
money was found on them.
Cosatu threatened to stop work altogether at the resort in December, and said
it would not allow traffic to enter, dealing a blow to the organizers of the
Nedbank Million Dollar Golf Challenge.
"Cosatu calls on all workers at Sun City to down tools on the day in question
and it warmly warns all those who are being prepared to work as casuals on the
day not to try the working force's patience as they will be endangering their
own lives," said Cosatu in a statement.
The trade union is demanding that the Chief Executive Officer of Sun
International, DC Coutts-Trotter address the issues on hand.
