February 8 - North West police revealed that
Sun City
was the scene of an armed robbery last week.
According to the police, ten heavily armed men entered the casino around
midnight and stole an undisclosed amount of money from the casino.
"They entered the casino at 11.50 pm and ordered the cashier to give them
money from the till and a small safe. They then fired two shots and fled," said
a police spokesperson, Inspector Wilmarie van der Merwe.
Sun City's security guards tried to barricade the exit gates but the men
drove through and managed to escape.
As they were fleeing the scene, another security guard on a motorcycle gave
chase and was shot at by the robbers.
The police account of the crime as it unfolded: "As the men drove off on the
Sun City - Pretoria road, other security guards chased after them, the men
stopped and opened fire at them. A shoot out ensued, then the men fled. No one
was injured in that shootout."
The police said that the security guard who had been wounded prior to the
shoot out was in stable condition in hospital.
Officials are investigating the matter and it was later reported that two out
of the four vehicles used by the robbers were found abandoned on the side of the
road.
