The South African Conference of the 2012 Super 15 Rugby is interestingly
poised. The starting favourites, the Stormers, are at the top of the table with
20 points having won all their games. The Bulls have sprung a surprise. They
were rated in third place before the Super 15 Rugby began, but are now in the
second spot.
Though they have lost one match, the Bulls have earned three bonus
points and are breathing down the necks of the Stormers with 19 points.
Therefore the upcoming Stormers vs. Bulls match has added interest for South
African punters and rugby fans.
As is the practice before such important fixtures, the supporters and the
media highlight non-sporting issues. Many of the Stormers fans in Cape Town have
begun to make fun of the new pink outfit that the Bulls have adopted for their
away games.
Fortunately the Stormers captain Jean de Villiers has displayed a mature
response to the issue. He said, “We are all proud of the jerseys and the colours
we play for, but in the end it is about the team you represent, not what you
wear.” He added the important thing is what the jersey represents and not its
colour and therefore what the Bulls wear is irrelevant to the contest.
The mind games extend to sporting issues as well. The Stormers coach Allister
Coetzee said that the Bulls are predictable and incapable of springing a
surprise. “I have seen how the Bulls have been playing for years now and I can’t
see that they will change their style.”
He added that although the Bulls are good, his team has answers to all their
moves. But a part of the truth is that the Stormers have won their matches with
the narrowest of margins, while the Bulls enter Saturday’s Super 15 Rugby game
having made mincemeat of the defending champions. And this will definitely play
on the minds of the Stormers.
