June 25 - Now I am as patriotic as the next beer-swilling, biltong-loving,
boep-nurtering South African, but how long am I expected to support a national
rugby team as 'wishy-washy' as the Springboks?
I mean from one game to the next the bok performance seems to swing like a pendulum between excellent and poor. And what really gets my goat is that there seems to be zero consistancy in the Springbok game which is hurting what I believe should be the best union rugby team in the world.
Just look at our Tri-Nations performance against the All Blacks on Saturday in
Durban. The Springboks dominated the enormous, hard-tackling Kiwis from the opening whistle, proving that
we have what it takes to keep one of the strongest rugby teams in the world at
bay.
In fact, the Springboks showed their superiority right up until the 66th minute
of the game, when the Bokke lead the All Blacks by a convincing 21 to 12, an
impressive score line against the 'Hakka Hurricanes'.
That is
until the Springbok 'wheels fell off' and our boys in green and gold managed, without any effort at all, to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
In just a few jaw-dropping minutes, the All Blacks had the Springboks running around like a
couple of peacocks at shooting party, once again showing the rugby world what
true grit and determination are all about (referring to the All Blacks not our
chaps).
Seemingly losing steam faster than a sauna during a power failure, the
Springboks seemed to 'split at the seems' allowing the opportunistic and ever-focused All Blacks
to gain the upper
hand to see out the end of the match with a 26 to 21 victory.
But whose fault was this lack-luster performance during the end game by the Springboks?
Was it coach, Jake White (Jake please don't send your cronies after me) or were the lads simply to tired to put in the effort
or couldn't they keep their minds of a delicious post-match Durban-curry dinner?
