November 20 - It seems that the 'run of bad luck/bad
management' plaguing the Springboks
continues as the South African national rugby team lost (albeit narrowly) to England by
23-21 at Twickenham in London on Saturday.
Also trying to overcome their own poor form of late, England managed to hold on and
excel themselves to win the match and, in doing so, send the morale of the Springboks to even
deeper doldrums.
In fact to pour more salt in the South Africans' wounds, England managed to
avoid a record eight consecutive defeat as well as make seven the number of
consecutive wins over the Springboks.
It seemed from the outset that the Springboks were the stronger and better team, with the
English side forced to stay on their toes at all times. Tries by South Africa's Butch James
in the first half and Akona Ndungane early in the second put the Bokke firmly
ahead at 21-13.
It seemed like England couldn't do anything right but still somehow managed to claw their way
back with sheer grit and determination, with an excellent try from Mark Cueto and another eight minutes from the final whistle by Phil Vickery.
Vickery's try was crowned off by a magnificent conversion from fly half Andy Goode, cementing the
English victory.
As usual Springbok coach, Jake White, picked up flack in some quarters for
supposedly leaving first class players at home and selecting instead more inexperienced
players. However, there is no evidence that White will be axed as SA coach anytime soon.
England's victory over the Springboks has resulted in South Africa slipping even
further down the IRB World Rankings to position 5 behind Australia 4, Ireland 3,
France 2 and New Zealand in first place.
