August 5 - While most rugby teams struggle to win three games in a row during any tournament, the acting coach for the Wallabies, Jim Williams believes that the Springboks won't be having that problem this weekend in the upcoming match between the two teams.
In the entire history of the Tri Nations, only three teams have managed to win their third consecutive game after a series of straight games played, and no team managed this feat last year.
However, Williams thinks that the fact that the Springboks have been enjoying the entire winter in South Africa and that all three games are being played at home, gives the South African team an enormous advantage.
"It is tough, with the format the way it is, playing three games in a row," said Williams. "But it is probably non existent in this instance. Having the opportunity to play three games at home will help them avoid fatigue you'd have to say."
Over the past two weekends, the Springboks have enjoyed great victories over the visiting All Blacks, a follow up of their performance during the British and Irish Lions tour which left them reigning kings.
In the meantime, the Springboks coach, Peter de Villiers, is playing down expectations and is not letting victory talk get to the heads of his players.
Even after the team's incredible 31-19 win on Saturday over the All Blacks, the coach said: "We've only won two games and there are four games still to be played. After the next few games we can talk again about that, but the platform is there and we know where to work from."
If the Boks continue on their winning streak, they will win their first Tri Nations title since 2004.
