October 12 - After making a formal complaint at a KwaZulu-Natal police
station on Friday night that her husband, Springbok kicking coach, Percy
Montgomery had punched her, Tasmin Montgomery has now dropped the charges.
In a joint statement, the couple said that "no charges were pressed, no court
appearances will be taking place, and we are simply distressed that 10 minutes
of flared tempers have led to headlines."
The drama began when a dispute between the two broke out at the Oyster Box
Hotel in Umhlanga, where - according to the charges made by Tasmin Montgomery -
the Springbok coach "squeezed his wife's leg" and "threw a punch at her".
Montgomery was then arrested on Sunday night and spent the night in prison,
before appearing in court the next day.
After being released on bail, Montgomery released the statement with his
wife.
"We confirm that a charge was laid in haste and overreaction to a
husband-and-wife argument the likes of which most couples probably exchange,"
said the statement. "No one was punched, nor was anyone injured, although a
piece of furniture was struck in frustration. The charge has been withdrawn."
It is alleged that Montgomery was intoxicated at the time of the argument.
This is not the first time that the Montgomery's have been involved in public
fallouts.
In his autobiography, Monty, the bok star wrote of his relationship with
Tasmin: "We have an intense and passionate relationship and I guess there was a
lot of passive aggression in the way we communicated. When I look back now,
there seemed to be some sort of power struggle going on. I was a successful
rugby player and she was a successful model and neither was willing to step back
for the relationship or to give up a personal identity for a new identity as a
couple."
Montgomery has earned the most Springbok caps (102 in all) and was a major
contributor to South Africa's World Cup victory in 2007.
