February 25 - This was not a good weekend for South African Super 14 rugby as a
whole. Most of our local lads seemed to lack cohesion, anticipation and the type
of 'match play temperament' crucial in beating strong provincial teams in high
pressure situations.
In fact, the weekend could probably best be summed up one Super 14 rugby coach who
asked 'what is he smoking' in response to a statement from Springbok coach,
Peter de Villiers, that at least three South African teams could earn places in
the Super 14 semi-finals.
If you missed all the matches here is a brief summary of the South African games:
On Friday night, the Bulls were crushed by the Crusaders by an embarrassing 54
to19 at Loftus Versfeld, while on Saturday, the Blues blasted the Lions by 55
to10 at Ellis Park. These results, alone, have left most 'smoke free' South
Africans in little doubt that our Super 14 hopes may be heading into the danger
zone.
If there was one South African team that could have used a little luck, it was
the Cheetahs. On Friday evening in Bloemfontein, the Free Staters fought a hard
game against Western Force. Clearly not hard enough though as, for the second
time in so many weeks, they lost by one point. Final score 16 to 15.
The Sharks, however, managed to hold on to claim a 12 to 10 victory against the
Stormers on Saturday in Durban. Particularly worth a mention is the impressive
goal kicking displayed by Sharks' scrumhalf, Rory Kockott on the night - perhaps
South Africa's only bright light in the Super 14 this weekend.
In terms of the other games, the Hurricanes beat the Reds by 23 to 18 Reds in
Wellington, the Chiefs beat the Waratahs by 20 to 17 in Hamilton, and the
Brumbies beat the Highlanders by 22 to 20 in Canberra.
After week 2 of the Super 14, the Crusaders lead the 2008 Super 14 Table with 10
points.
