July 5 - According to a Cape newspaper, a report by the National Centre for the
Study of Gambling has shown that problem gamblers are on the decrease in South
Africa.
The research showed that over the past two years the number of South African problem gamblers
dropped from 7 percent to just under 5 percent.
The report was conducted on behalf of the National Responsible Gambling Program
across over 3000 adult South Africans based in urban areas within close proximity to
casinos.
Said program executive director Professor Peter Collins, 'Out of all adult South
Africans, approximately 4.8 percent are problem gamblers, and less than 1
percent compulsive or pathological gamblers.
'The report has clearly shown that South Africans are far more aware about the potential
pitfalls of gambling then ever before, which proves that our public awareness initiatives
must clearly be working,' said Collins.
