South Africans Continue to be Big Casino Fans

February 4 - Despite the fact that interest rates, food, petrol prices and the general cost of living is on the rise, research has shown that South Africans are continuing to spend their money in casinos throughout South Africa.

The results of the Survey of Casino Entertainment in SA compiled last year by the Casino Association of South Africa (Casa), show that casino gambling revenue has grown by a massive 15 percent during the 2005 and 2006.

Said Casa chief executive, Derek Auret, 'Since the National Gambling Act was passed in 1997, casino gambling seems to have developed a reputation as a desirable leisure activity, which holds true as long as people gamble affordably and in moderation.'

The Survey of Casino Entertainment in SA revealed some interesting casino gambling 'tidbits':

In the past 5 years overall gambling profit has more than doubled in South Africa;
Over 20 million customers visited casinos in Gauteng which accounts for 41 percent of the total casino spend;
A total of 14.2 million people visited KwaZulu-Natal land casinos;
10.8 percent of the national gambling spend was on alternative forms of gambling such as scratch cards and the National Lottery; and
5 new casinos are on the cards in South Africa - 1 in Gauteng, 2 in the Northern Cape and 2 in the Eastern Cape.

According to Dr Rodger Meyer, director of the Kenilworth Addiction Treatment centre, despite the casino industry's expansion, problem gambling in South Africa has remained stable during the past few years.
