March 16 - Online gambling is South Africa has seen a recent boom, especially the poker industry. This is taking place despite it being illegal in terms of the 2004 National Gambling Act.
It seems South Africa is no exception to the recent boom in popularity of poker. The All-Africa Poker Championship was held in Swaziland last month at the Piggs Peak Casino and had a turnout of 90 players. Peter Vermaas from Cape Town won the R1-million jackpot for the second time.
Casino Enterprises, which is the company running Piggs Peak and the Gauteng Gambling Board are entangled in a battle regarding how legal the operation is.
The case that caused the problem started in 2003 when Piggs Peak decided it was a good idea to launch a lengthy court action, with the intention of seeking a declaratory judgment that its online gambling operation in South Africa was legal.
Piggs Peak's has claimed that the online casino should be permitted to legally operate in South Africa due to the fact that its servers are hosted in Swaziland.
In the mean time, December saw Cabinet approve a Draft Gambling Amendment Bill to regulate online and mobile phone gambling.
