September 26 - South Africa's millions of Lotto lovers have reason to
celebrate with the news that the National Lottery will shortly be making a welcome
return after a lengthy 6 month hiatus, according to the South African Ministry
for Commerce and Industry.
The long wait has been the result of a drawn out legal dispute over the South
African's 'controversial' appointment of the company assigned to take over from
Uthingo, the first and currently only company to operate the lottery in the country.
The company that has been awarded the National Lottery tender for 7 years and 8
months is called Gidani (Pty) Ltd which is backed by a leading Greek gambling
company called Intralot, which will supply the Lottery technology infrastructure
as well as support services.
Said Intralot CEO, Kostantinos Antonopoulos, 'We are extremely pleased that our
consortium was chosen as the winning bidder because it has local and
international experience on how best to run a lottery operation on a national scale.'
Being cynical, we only hope that no money in unmarked manila envelopes passed between certain individuals
to ensure that the above consortium will enjoy the 'benefits' of operating what
can only be described as a 'goldmine' for the next 8 years.
Of course this makes little difference to the millions of South African lottery
fans who just want the chance to win jackpot millions and instant 'happiness'
with just a few rand, an infinite amount of faith in daily prayer and a
never-ending belief in miracles.
Watch this space folks!
