October 24 - There's night horseracing at Newmarket tonight, and the meeting
features several very competitive races with the added bonus of some potential
future stars of South African horseracing on display.
The main race on the card for this meeting is a merit-rating 92 open handicap
over 1200m, and the unbeaten gelding VIVA VOCE will surely head the betting for
that one.
Later on in the evening the fillies and mares will race 1800m and BENNIE AND THE
JETS will take on LADY ZABELIA and OLYMPIC STORM in another high-quality field.
Our preview includes a couple of long-shots for you to include in all Exotics as
well as out best bet on the card.
The Pick Six starts in the fourth race and if you feel that VIVA VOCE might come
unstuck it becomes a minefield to handicap this one. Buddy Maroun has two
runners in the race, and his horses are always a danger in sprints.
FOUNTAINHEAD has been expensive to follow and clearly lacks heart, but with
Strydom up and good form he has to come into the reckoning as well. Charles
Laird also has a powerful coupling in the race although both FIRE PRACTICE and
WHITE NIGHTS might still need the run.
The horse that could really upset the applecart and leave them all behind,
however, is PRIDE 'N JOY who has won 3 of his last 4 races and has a light
weight. We actually make this a two-horse race for the Pick 6.
The fifth race sees our first long shot selection for the meeting and it's
BINDELLA, who is currently quoted in the betting at 7-1. Mark Khan gets the ride
and she faces a field dominated by Charles Laird runners - who saddles no less
than 4 of her 6 opponents.
All four will need this run and that leaves the race wide open for BINDELLA in
our view.
The best bet on the card is in the 6th race where NEWS TRAVELS FAST should be
hard to beat for the Zaki/Strydom combination. Opposition will come from
KINGTANGO, but this could be too sharp for the Argentinean colt. We make Strydom
a banker in this one.
The last race on the card sees another horse with exceptional potential back on
the track in BOSANOVA. This Fort Wood colt destroyed a field of maidens last
time out by 9.5 lengths.
He could be anything but Marwing has the ride again and only a brave soul would
bet against this classy looking 3-year old from making it a quick double.
Our advice is to go light in the Pick 6 here. There are some very good horses
that could prove hard to beat and it makes little sense to play the 'roughies'
at Newmarket tonight. Class should tell and we expect the favourites to dominate
most of the races.'
