November 29 - After concerted marketing efforts and a promising entertainment line up, the organizers of this weekend's Steinhoff Summer Cup racing event are positive that they will hit their target of 15,000 spectators.
The Cup, which will take place later today, will hopefully attract a bigger crowd that has been seen in years at this $2 million event and officials said that they would be "absolutely delighted" if they met their target.
This doesn't seem seem to be too much of a problem, as already 10,000 spectators have booked their places on site, whether picnicking in the special demarcated areas, in the marquees or in the grand stands with some of the best views of the racecourse.
The organizers of the Steinhoff Summer Cup have been working around the clock to draw in the crowds, with excellent entertainment lined up, including fashion shows, bands, and a massive R1 million draw.
However, what really promises to put this event on the map is the International Jockey Challenge, held on the same day of the Cup. The organizers managed to woo six top international jockeys, including Frankie Dettori, the legendary Italian jockey.
"The eventual target is to place Steinhoff Summer Cup day on par with the Vodacom Durban July and the J&B Met in terms of attendance and public awareness," said Patrick Davis, the racing executive speaking for Phumelela.
Recent years have seen less and less people attending live horse racing events, with industry analysts putting this down to the rise in popularity of casinos, international sporting events televised and a 24 hour racing and betting channel in South Africa.
