April 8 - Sol Kerzner's greatest achievement in South Africa until now has been his creation of Sun City that he built in the then homeland of Bophuthatswana. However, after establishing Sun City as one of the top gambling and entertainment destinations of the world, Kerzner went on to conquer the rest of the world, developing projects in practically every corner of the globe.
Perhaps Kerzner's most ambitious project yet was the opening of his Atlantis Resort in Dubai recently, but clearly his heart lay in the opening of his latest South African 'baby' - the One and Only luxury hotel in Cape Town.
Returning back to South Africa for the official opening of the hotel was naturally done in style and Kerzner threw a lavish party to the tune of R10 million for 400 special guests last week.
Those who walked the red carpet included Matt Damon, Clint Eastwood and Robert de Niro, as well as many South African celebs.
Kerzner was optimistic about the success of his new R100 million project which is built on two artificial islands off the Waterfront. This is his first South African venture since 1992 and he clearly wanted the luxury hotel to become a landmark in the country.
"I think this hotel is going to raise the bar for the hotel industry in South Africa," he said in a newspaper interview.
When asked about how he expects the current economic world financial climate to affect the hotel, Kerzner seemed unperturbed. "When you build these hotels, you look at how they're going to do in the medium term," he said, "and in the medium term, it's going to be sensational."
The most expensive room in the One and Only is the presidential suite where most of us could only dream of affording the R55,000 a night price tag in high season.
