November 20 - Eighteen year old Caster Semenya, the South African
runner who won the 800 m race at the World Championships this year, will need to
wait a little longer for the results of the controversial gender testing that
she was subjected to.
After Semenya's amazing 1 minute 55.45 seconds victory in Berlin, the
International Amateur Athletics Federations (IAAF) revealed that Semenya had
been asked to undergo gender testing to determine whether she was eligible to
compete in other athletic competitions as a woman.
Semenya's muscular build and her record breaking performance triggered the
request.
While the IAAF was due to reveal the results of the testing by the end of
this week, it was announced on Wednesday that there had been a delay in the
findings "until further notice."
Caster Semenya will therefore have to wait a little longer to find out where
the future of promising running career stands.
A statement issued by the IAAF read: "The IAAF, the South African Ministry of
Sport and Recreation and Caster Semenya's representatives have been and still
are in discussions with a view to resolving the issues surrounding Caster
Semenya's participation in athletics.
The reason for the delay, according to the IAAF, is that medical tests have
yet to be completed.
The IAAF said that it would not comment any further on the Semenya case until
further notice, nor would the case be discussed at the upcoming IAAF Council
Meeting due to take place in Monaco this week.
Caster Semenya has attracted huge support from South Africans who have
rallied to her defence since the story broke.
