SA World Cup 2010 Lottery Scam Exposed

November 13 - Several unsuspecting South Africans may have fallen victim to a lottery scam that is presently doing the rounds in the country. Lottery scams are unfortunately not uncommon and the latest one claims to be linked to the upcoming 2010 World Cup soccer event due to take place in South Africa.

The lottery scam is addressed simply to "The Winner" and informs the recipient that he or she has won 750,000 GBP. The 'winner' is asked to call a certain Mr. Brian Newman in the United Kingdom at a listed number.

When a leading South African newspaper got a so-called winner to make the call in order to see what happened from then, she was told that she would need to send her identity information, including her banking details via email or fax to the UK. Although the 'winner' said that she would prefer sending the details over the telephone, 'Brian Newman' (with a strong African accent) continued to insist that she could only get the money if she sent the details through fax or email.

By linking the lottery to the World Cup 2010, the fraudsters apparently feel that they have a better chance of targeting their victims. The familiar name and logo of the World Cup, as well as the use of the Local Organizing Committee title on the lottery scam letter lends more authenticity to the correspondence, making the victims less suspicious.

The South African police has warned the general public about this particular lottery scam, as well as others, and said that if they should be sent an email stating "We are happy to announce to you the draw of South African 2010 World Cup Bid Lottery Award International programs in held in UK", they should ignore it.
