February 21 - The South African tennis team participating in the Euro-African Group One Davis Cup tie against Macedonia was disappointed to hear that one of the country's top ranking players, Kevin Anderson, will not be making up part of the team.
The tennis event which is scheduled to take place at the Emperor's Palace in Johannesburg from March 6-8 will still have a strong South African team, organizers have promised, but Anderson's absence will certainly be felt. The South African team was recently promoted to Group 1 and is still considered to be a fair competition for their Macedonian counterparts.
Anderson cited a hectic tournament schedule in the United States as the reason for not joining his fellow countrymen in the Davis Cup and said he didn't want to partake in travel backwards and forwards between the U.S. and South Africa in order to participate in the competition. Rik de Voest, another top SA tennis player in a similar position, has decided to deal with the hectic travel schedule and will be the head of the team against Macedonia.
The outcome of the competition means that one team will be promoted to the prestigious, top-rung Davis Cup World Group that would include top teams like Spain. Macedonia haven't finalized their team yet, but their highest ranking player, Pedrag Rusevski, is only rated 825th in the world. SA Tennis Association CEO Ian Smith, however, warned the SA team not to rest on their laurels as the Macedonian team has surprised unsuspecting contestants in the past.
The singles pair for the South African team will be selected from between the following players - De Voest, Van der Merwe and Klaasen. It is assumed that the doubles team will comprise of Jeff Coetzee and Wesley Moodie, who are ranked eighth in the world.
