October 6 - According to industry insiders, the Monte Casino hotel and gambling venue - the largest in Gauteng - has been ear marked by the South African Tennis Association as a possible venue for next February's SA Open event.
However, SATA has refrained from making an official announcement about the event being held at MonteCasino because this would be going over the head of the SA Open's sponsor, South African Airways who need to make the announcement themselves.
If rumors are correct and MonteCasino has been chosen as next year's venue, the resort would need to expand its existing two tennis courts to incorporate a further six at least.
Johan Koorts, the Chairman of the South African Tennis Association could confirm that a location had been chosen and that, if it was up to him, the announcement would be made as soon as possible. Koorts was also able to confirm that should Monte Casino be that location, it had the potential space for many extra new courts.
While Ellis Park had been considered as a venue in the past, this was ruled out by Koorts in his statement because the area surrounding the park had degraded significantly in the past few years.
Koorts praised tennis successes in the past few months and then turned to the subject of funding for SATA- something that has been sorely missing this year, according to him.
According to an agreement, the National Lottery is supposed to channel funds to the affiliates of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC). However, Koorts says that SATA is still waiting for its money from the lottery, and cannot survive on the R50,000 forwarded to the association from the governement.
"I don't know what is happening there," said Koorts, referring to the goings-on at SASOC. "We give SASCOC a five year plan every year but nothing happens and we are not getting our money from the lotto."
