March 10 - After last weekend's dismal showing in the Super 14 rugby tournament
from 4 our 5 teams, on this weekend the general level of play from all of the
teams seems to have been slightly raised with three wins out of five matches for
South Africa.
The operative word here, of course, is 'slightly', because the without a doubt
if the teams keep on playing the way they have - except for the Sharks who have
shown true rugby tournament prowess - they will likely end up at the bottom of
the leader board by the end of the Super 14 rugby tournament.
The most spectacular result belonged to the Sharks who successfully held off the
determined and focused Blues to win the game by 22 - 17, showing once again the
teams high level of grit, determination, teamwork and skill, which has placed
them second on the leader board with 17 points to the Crusaders' 19.
As for the Bulls, the Super 14 defending champions, since the start of the
2008 tournament 4 weeks ago, the Bulls have only managed to score a dismal four tries
in four games. This has resulted in them being dead last (tied with Western
Force) in terms of tries scored and second last in terms of
tries conceded. Sies man! This weekend, though, they managed to score two of their
four tries against the Lions, leading to a 31 - 17 victory.
What is there to say about the Lions. Absolutely nothing.
Probably the most redeemable South African team is the Cheetahs (apart from the
Sharks), who seem to be having a string of bad luck. During this Super 14
tournament they have lost two matches by a single point - against the Lions and
Western Force respectively, and what's worse in the final seconds. This weekend
proved no different, as they lost by 22 - 20 against the Chiefs thanks to a
penalty just 3 minutes before the final whistle.
And while the Stormers celebrated a 34 -16 win over the Reds, the team's
Captain, Jean de Villiers, was quoted as saying that the side 'made a lot of
mistakes'. However, he was quick to point out that as the Stormers' first win in
this years Super 14 tournament, that it was a good confidence builder for the
team. Let's hope the teams newly found confidence pays dividends next weekend
when they play the Chiefs.
In other results, the Highlanders beat the Hurricanes by 10 - 6, the Waratahs
beat the Brumbies by 24 -17, and the Crusaders beat Western Force by 24 - 29.
