March 3 - While the Super 14 rugby tournament still has a ways to go yet,
after this weekend's games (week 3), four of South Africa's five teams managed
to make the tournament's bottom six, with Australian and New Zealand provincial
teams way out ahead.
Plus, the South African teams haven't yet played in New Zealand or Australia
yet, which means that they'll lose out on 'home ground advantage'. Although, it
certainly doesn't take a rocket surgeon to see that thus far 'home ground
advantage' has had little effect on our players.
After this weekend, two New Zealand teams are leading the Super 14 - The
Blues with 15 points, followed by the Crusaders with 14 points. However, of the
14 teams, the Brumbies, the Sharks, the Hurricanes and the Waratahs look as
though they could challenge the top two.
At this point, it looks as though the Sharks are the only SA team with any hope
of making the country proud, especially when you look at the standings of the
other four teams: Lions in 9th place, Bulls in 11th place, Cheetahs in 13th
place and the Stormers in 14th place. Not great.
Counting the Sharks' three wins, thus far in the Super 14 South Africa have a
dismal five wins to their name from a total of 15 matches, four of which were
scrounged against fellow SA teams. This lackluster statistic does not bode well
for the teams, nor their millions of supporters.
When our lads start turning things around in the Super 14, we look forward to
reporting the Super 14 match highlights in detail.
