December 21 - South Africa's national soccer team, Bafana Bafana, was given
something to smile about after it was learnt that the team had been moved one
spot up on the FIFA ranking table last week.
Bafana Bafana moved to the 85th place in the world, following draws against
Jamaica and Japan in two recent friendly matches.
The games took place under the leadership of the new coach, Carlos Alberto
Parreira.
Parreira took over from Joel Santana early last month and is expected to take
the South African team into its prestigious position as hosts of the upcoming
World Cup tournament in 2010.
Top of the FIFA rankings was once again Spain for the second year running.
Other interesting rankings on the latest FIFA table include:
Netherlands - 3rd place; unchanged
Italy - 4th place; unchanged
France - 7th place
Cameroon - 11th palace
Greece - 12th place
Ivory Coast - 16th place
Uruguay - 19th place
Nigeria - 22nd
Egypt - 24
Algeria - 26
New Zealand - dropped five places to 82nd place.
