September 22 - A South African soccer referee who officiated in the SA's Premier
Soccer League (PSL) has been found guilty in Durban of attempted match fixing.
A Durban magistrate convicted Enoch Radebe, who was charged with two counts of
corruption as well as two alternative charges of corrupting a sporting event.
Radebe allegedly offered his assistant and another referee R4000 to 'fix' a game
between Ajax and Golden Arrows in April 2004.
Radebe was arrested at the time
along with other soccer referees and officials suspected of match fixing.
The disgraced referee was released on R5000 bail on the condition that he
doesn't leave the Durban municipal area. He is due back in court on October 18th
for sentencing.
The maximum prison sentence for this offence in South Africa is 18 years.
