February 27 - As the English team Blackburn Rovers struggles to stay away from the bottom of the soccer log, its two South African players are worrying about their own future if their worst nightmare comes true and the team is relegated.
Aaron Makoena and Benni McCarthy are keen to get as many English Premier League playing hours under their belts this year as they gear up for the contest of their life - the chance to play for the Bafana Bafana squad in the FIFA World Cup that will take place in South Africa next year.
However, as the Blackburn Rovers continue to struggle for their place on the board, Makoena and McCarthy may need to face the fact that they may be dropped from the team at the end of the English Premier League season.
Mokoena's contract with the Rovers expires in the summer, and the player may just find himself without a team at the most critical stage of his career.
McCarthy's future seems somewhat brighter as he is only one year into his three year contract, although he might need to be bought out if relegation happens.
At present, the Blackburn Rovers are sharing second last place on the log with Middlesbrough at 23 points, only one point in front of West Bromwich Albion.
There are 13 games left in the season before relegation decisions are made, and Coach Sam Allradyce, who replaced Paul Ince in December, is doing all he can to keep infuse his team with a fighting spirit.
"Our whole focus needs to be on staying up," said Rovers chairman John Williams. "That is what every effort is being put in to."
The Blackburn Rovers were beaten over the weekend by Manchester United at Old Trafford, adding to the frustration felt by Aaron Mokoena, Benni McCarthy and other team players.
