October 29 - South African die-hard poker fans who scrabble at every opportunity
to watch local and televised poker tournaments on the various satellite TV
channels on offer, are in for a treat with news that 'controversial'
Australian poker pro, Tony G, will be winging his way to our shores in 2008.
It has been reported that the well-known poker player will arrive in South
Africa in February next year to compete in the 2008 South African PokerNews Open
poker tournament that is set to be hosted at leading casino venue, Montecasino,
north of Johannesburg.
Tony G is the principal owner of the PokerNews website that will be sponsoring
the event.
Born Antanas Guoga, Tony G has been a regular and popular fixture in
professional poker tournaments hosted all over the world because of his
undeniable poker skill and understanding of the game, but also because he is
very well known for throwing off his opponents with his continual 'trash talk'.
Whether mumbling to himself or purposely trying to break down his opponents
defences with a non-stop stream of 'Tony Talk', this top-rated poker player has
proved that he has what it takes to beat some of the world's most formidable
poker pros, including Daniel Negreanu and Phil Helmouth.
However, Tony G came from humble beginnings when he emigrated with his family to
Melbourne, Australia as a child and from Kaunas, Lithuania'. While in Lithuania,
Tony discovered the spotlight, and that he liked it, by
becoming Lithuania's youngest Rubik's Cube solving champion at the tender age of
11.
While in his late teens, Tony discovered that he had a talent for winning money by
playing poker against the kids in his neighbourhood and, as result, started to
hone his poker skills until he began to win some large poker tournaments. And
the rest, as they say, is history.
