December 7 - The Western Cape Gambling and Betting Board has approved an
application from international bookmaker
Victor Chandler for a license to
operate in South Africa.
Victor Chandler, based in Gibraltar, will offer a full range of sports
betting services in the country.
The license comes just in time for the betting frenzy expected to happen
during the World Cup in 2010.
One of the main objectives of the group's new presence in South Africa is the
creating of a new World Cup betting site that will incorporate the latest news,
fixtures, updated tables and more.
The Chief Executive Officer of Victor Chandler, Michael Carlton discussed the
group's new status in South Africa and said: "We are naturally excited about
this opportunity. Alongside offering a South African specific website to
customers, we will also be creating numerous employment opportunities."
Carlton said that Victor Chandler was proud to be involved in a country where
sport is so entrenched in the national culture. "I will be investing locally
over the next few months in order to launch our full range sports betting
service in time for the World Cup," he said.
After a spectacular draw on Friday night which saw 32 World Cup qualifiers
placed in eight houses, the teams can now plot a route that they hope will lead
them to the finals in 2010.
Hosting South Africa will face a number of tough teams on its way up,
including France, Mexico and Uruguay that were all delegated to Group A.
A match between Uruguay and France will take place on June 11 at 8.30, and
the results will determine South Africa's continuation in the World Cup.
The draw ignited World Cup fever, an event that is expected to attract
hundreds of thousands of visitors to South Africa next year.
