September
20 - The Ryder Cup for 2006 begins two days from now on Friday September 22 at
the K Club in Ireland.
The home course advantage is one factor in the latest betting for this
incredible event, which sees the team from Europe favoured to win it all at a
best price of 8.5/10. The USA team, led by big names like Woods and Mickelson is
the underdog at 11/8.
Another reason that Team Europe has been installed as the favourite in the
betting is their recent dominance of the Ryder Cup: four of the last five events
have been won by Europe. The previous Ryder Cup was held in 2004 in the United
States and Europe crushed the Yanks in a humiliating 18.5 – 9.5 points
thrashing.
The last time the United States won the Ryder Cup was a famous win at the
Brookline course in 1999. This time around the USA is captained by Tom Lehman
while Europe is led by the diminutive Welshman Ian Woosnam.
The European team is almost certainly going to play with more emotion, not only
because they are defending the Ryder Cup in Ireland, but also because Darren
Clarke is on the team. Clarke, a hugely popular player, recently lost his wife
to cancer. He has a fantastic Ryder Cup record and enjoys this course as well.
The talismanic leader of the Europeans is undoubtedly Colin Montgomerie, a
fierce competitor in this format of golf. He will be opposed by Tiger Woods, who
needs to be at his very best to give the Americans a chance of snatching the
Ryder Cup against the odds.
Betting on the Ryder Cup will be offered for all individual games, as well as on
which player will score the most points for his team. Our advice is a small
wager on Jim Furyk to be the leading points scorer for USA, while a bet on
Darren Clarke for Europe also looks like excellent value.
