February 24 - As the much talked about South African Rugby Union's
Champions Tour reached its 20th day this week, Springbok coach, Peter de
Villiers spoke about his experience on the road.
The tour, which will involve 45 days across South Africa, has the sole
purpose of showcasing South Africa's rugby success.
De Villiers said that the tour has been "humbling" and he was astounded at
the reaction of the public as they cheered on the national team's success.
The coach has joined the Tour for significant chunks of time in order to
personally sign autographs, meet devoted fans and speak about rugby.
"It's very humbling to see the reaction of people to the Tour," he said.
"Many of them never thought they'd ever get the chance to see these trophies and
here they are in their own back yard."
De Villiers said the Tour was a chance to make everybody in South Africa part
of the team's achievements.
"We always said we were playing and hoping to win for the people and this is
our way of showing that we meant it," he said.
De Villiers said that while only a certain number of people were physically
able to attend Tests, the Tour was now adding "tens of thousands" to them by
giving them the chance to share in the Springboks' success.
The Tour consists of a vehicle measuring 22 meters in length, which showcases
all major trophies won by the Boks in recent years.
The highlight of the Tour's treasures is undoubtedly the Rugby World Cup
which is proudly displayed.
The SARU Tour began in Cape Town earlier this month and will end off in
Durban on the 21st of March after completing 7,000 km.
