September 25 - After the racist comments and abuse endured by the South African
cricket team while touring Australia last year, the International Cricket
Council (ICC) has finally amended its anti-racism code to include 'evictions
from grounds' and 'lifetime bans' for future offenders.
The amendments were prompted by severe racial abuse directed at the South
African Proteas when they played at the various Australian crickets grounds last
year. As a result, South Africa's United Cricket Board (UCB) lodged an official
complaint with the ICC, cricket's governing body.
Under the amendments of the ICC anti-racism code, cricket fans anywhere in the
world can now be banned for life from cricket grounds if found guilty of racial
abuse. In addition, cricket venues themselves can be stripped of international
status if their management and ICC member countries fail to uphold the code.
Cricket Australia (CA) has yet to announce what kind of education and
enforcement policy it will introduce to maintain its 'zero tolerance
policy' it is hoping to enforce during this year's cricket season.
The ICC is apparently in support of the installation of telephone 'hot lines' at
cricket venues where fans can anonymously report racially offensive behaviour, as well as
the appointment of certain cricket players as 'anti-racism ambassadors'.
So the next time you meet an Australian cricket fan, please don't be tempted to call
him or her a 'criminal' or a 'yobbo'.
