February 10 - Despite lying second last in this season's Premier Soccer League, known by the acronym PSL, with 18 points, on Saturday Bloemfontein Celtic surprised their fans, and undoubtedly themselves, when they chalked up an impressive 2-1 victory against Ajax Cape Town, who were lying third in the premiership.
The shock defeat at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium in Bloemfontein on the weekend meant that instead of reclaiming the number two spot in the PSL standings, Ajax dropped into fourth place. Bloemfontein Celtic on the other hand were over the moon at their victory, although their joy was kept in check.
Jimmy Augousti, Bloemfontein Celtic's managing director, reportedly had a chat with the lads soon after the match where he warned them about the challenges they face in this weekend's showdown with Kaizer Chiefs, who are themselves currently lying fifth in the league, and only to eager for an easy victory.
Back in the change rooms while the happy Celtic players were busy high-fiving each other, Augousti reportedly boomed at the players, telling them to forget about their incredible Ajax victory and focus instead on their next big challenge - their upcoming game against the Kaizer Chiefs in Pretoria on Saturday.
Said Augousti, 'While it was a good win against Ajax today, in football you are only as good as your last match. Now we have to maintain the momentum and keep the consistency going by getting something against Chiefs next weekend.' Wise words indeed, if the Celtics expect to dispatch the Chiefs as they did Ajax.
However, Celtic will are sure to have their work cut out for them as they'll have to face the much-focused and out-for-revenge Kaizer Chiefs, who themselves suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Morocco Swallows this weekend, and will thus be keen to dispatch the bottom-of-the-leaguers in Pretoria.
As for the way they played against Ajax, many in South African football circles credit both Celtic's midfielder Gert Schalkwyk for bringing the best out of his fellow midfielder, Moses Spandeel, and of course coach Owen da Gama, who has injected a new energy and passion into the team, not seen for a while.
