December 4 - The Proteas' triumph over India yesterday at Centurion Park by 9 wickets and 18 overs to spare in the fifth and final cricket Test, cemented South Africa as victors of the series by 4-0.
India lost the toss and South Africa opted to bowl first in the stifling
Centurion heat, and quickly began to make 'mincemeat' out of India's batsmen. It
didn't feel like very long before India had reached a sparse 200 for 9, with Sachin
Tendulkar the top-scoring batsman reaching only 55.
When South Africa came into bat, it was the start of a beautiful partnership
with captain Graeme Smith and dynamo, AB de Villiers facing down India's best
bowlers.
Both batsmen seemed very comfortable at blasting India's deliveries to all
corners of the field, quickly piling on the runs. Even when
India introduced its spin bowlers, the boys continued to reach the
boundaries.
De Villiers was the first to achieve a half century, and Smith his 20th one-day
fifty not long after. Eventually when Smith went out, the crowd had begun to wane
as it became increasingly obvious that South Africa were a matter of minutes
away from the Test and Series victory.
Shaun Pollock came in and blasted Irfan Pathan's bowling to the tune of three
fours in one over before the match was won, however. With the Proteas enjoying a
much-needed boost of confidence, it is clear that the Indian side need to go
back to the drawing board.
