April 18 - After their dismal performance against New Zealand in the 2007
Cricket World Cup, the Proteas managed to dig deep to come back fighting and
convincingly dispatch England in their quarter final match yesterday.
In a clearly one-sided match, the Proteas procured an impressive 9-wicket
victory over England, with skipper Graeme Smith scoring 89 not-out off only 58
balls with 30 overs to spare, to cruise past England's 154 run total.
Unlike in the New Zealand game, Smith and fellow opening batsman AB de Villiers,
seemed to be fired up when they kicked off their partnership and quickly turned
the match into a 'no-contest'.
England's ill-fated decision to bat first backfired badly as South African
bowlers Charl Langeveldt and Shaun Pollock, made life extremely difficult for
England openers, Bell and Vaughn.
The England batsmen could not seem to terms with the crafty swing bowling from
Andrew Hall, who took an impressive 5 for 18 to effectively scupper England's
middle order.
After the match, England captain Vaughan admitted that his team had let
thousands of fans down after crashing so embarrassingly out of the 2007 Cricket
World Cup.
Graeme Smith, however, said after the match that it has been a tough tour at
times but that he was very proud of the way the Proteas came back after New
Zealand's victory to knock out England.
Said Smith, 'Our motivation came from knowing what we can play like and how we
wanted to play. We hadn't achieved it so far and we realised that we really
wanted to do it.'
The Proteas' victory earned them a semi-final showdown with current champions,
Australia.
