February 5 - When the Proteas stepped onto the field at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday, who knew they would deliver one of the
most 'flawless' Test cricket performances seen in a while?
In a nutshell, the Proteas made a fine start, quickly recovered from a slight
'speed wobble, and then accelerated their way to a convincing and impressive win
over Pakistan, sending the guests to their changing rooms with their tails
firmly between their legs.
Said Proteas vice-captain Jacques Kallis, 'This was probably as close to a
perfect Test cricket day out as possible.' And the mainly South African
spectators certainly agreed, with cheers from SuperSport Park heard far and
wide.
The Proteas started off with a more than decent partnership between AB de
Villiers and Graeme Smith, with the pair notching up 140 runs in 19 overs. And
down the line, Mark Boucher and Jacques Kallis 'blasted' an impressive 146 in
the last 10 overs.
The pitch, arguably in the best condition it has been in for a while, served as
an ideal platform for the South African batsmen to show off their considerable
skills ahead of the Cricket World Cup.
Said Pakistan captain Inzamam ul-Haq after the defeat, 'It was a poor
performance by Pakistan. At one point I thought even 300 was chaseable, but 390
was perhaps too much. On the day both our batting and bowling was off.'
The Proteas will aim to repeat their performance as the Test series heads to
the coast.
Said Kallis, 'We've got to make sure that we stay at this high level. Now that
we've a new standard for ourselves, we have got to make sure that we maintain
it.'
