April 16 - Just as we thought the Proteas were in with a chance to win the 2007
Cricket World Cup, they (yet again) had to go and show what a mediocre and
lacklustre team they can be, on this occasion against the Kiwis in Grenada this
weekend.
New Zealand beat South Africa by five wickets to claim a place in the semi
finals of the tournament, and deservedly too. The South African team looked
'fast asleep' for most of the match with dismal batting and dropped catches
setting the scene.
First to bat, the Proteas' batsmen scored a below average 93 for 7 which the
Kiwis easily met (with ten balls to spare). Lowlights included the early
dispatches of SA Captain, Graeme Smith when he was caught and shortly thereafter
AB de Villiers by LBW.
With two of South Africa's best hitters removed so early, much of the Proteas
hopes rested with Jacques Kallis, who after a slow start was too dispatched for
a paltry 22 by the talented Kiwi, Daniel Vettori.
While the Proteas managed to slow down their loss of wickets, they were unable
to speed up their run rate. So, when the Kiwis went in to bat, the South
Africans had their work cut out for them.
Unfortunately, however, the Kiwis clearly the better and more confident of the
two teams on the day, made a strong start and managed to hold off the Proteas,
whose efforts were not helped by a slew of dropped catches and sloppy fielding.
New Zealand's victory also meant that Sri Lanka now qualifies for the Cricket
World Cup semi-final, while South Africa's match against England today
effectively becomes a quarter-final.
