November 3 - The Chief Executive Officer of one of the United Kingdom's fastest growing mobile betting companies has said that the group is seriously considering expansion into the South African gambling market.
Charles Cohen, CEO of Probability, said that the company performed extremely well in the first half of the year, providing it with the opportunity to expand internationally. Cohen said that South Africa was a definite option, although he would not rule out Sweden or Italy - two countries that have a similar sized cell phone market to South Africa.
Although Cohen would not provide any details about Probability's actual plans to enter the South African mobile betting market, he did confirm that "initial contacts with several networks" had been made.
One of the main issues facing Probability is that of legislation in the South African gambling market. Although new laws have been passed, they have yet to be signed by the country's President. Cohen said that the company would be watching the process very carefully, and has not ruled out the possibility of teaming up with a local, licensed company to provide mobile gambling services to the country's 34 million cell phone subscribers.
Speaking to the IOL newspaper group, Charles Cohen said that Probability has "an open mind on this". He said that "it will depend a lot on the regulatory environment."
Probability is not the first international company to express its interest in entering the South African gambling market. Both the Austrian based bWin and the British Victor Chandler have said that they would do so as soon as the timing was right.
Probability noted that South Africans would be able to enjoy a similar range of games presently offered to British players, including a suite of casino games which incorporates roulette, blackjack and bingo, among others.
