August 29 - Yesterday afternoon Piggs Peak sent out this sad announcement to all South African players, which is the vast vast majority of all their active accounts:
"As you are aware we lost our application in the Pretoria High Court regarding the legality of South Africans playing on our Swaziland licensed internet casino which has serious implications for South African players. We are in the process of applying for leave to appeal the judgement and felt that we could continue operating in the interim. We have since been advised that we should stop operating for South African players until the matter has been resolved.
In your interests we have taken a decision to stop operating from midnight Saturday August 28 until application for leave to appeal has been heard and decided upon, which we feel should take no longer than a week or two. All remaining player balances, will be held safely at Piggs Peak Casino Swaziland. You can cash in any balance by e-mailing support@piggspeak.com
and your request will be processed.
Yours Sincerely,
Lew Saul Koor
Operations Director
Piggs Peak Casino"
In my interests? Really, it looks more like it is in Piggs interest so that they aren't extradited from Swaziland, or more likely driven away from Melrose Arch and imprisoned. Nevertheless, the bad news is that Piggs are poked. They look certain to lose the appeal - doesn't the other Koor still have any pull with the boys in blue? One guesses not, and suddenly Silver Sands poker ads with Dolph don't look quite that awful.
As far as we know Silver Sands are still doing business. Please note that it is now illegal for South Africans to bet on anything other than horse racing and Soccer 6 and sports and any other licensed, government sanctioned website. Phumelela really should launch an online poker site!
